Antionette: mother of 3 boys and 1 girl
This (book) is so easy to understand. I look through it and find out what I want to know. It is simple enough and yet gives the details needed to know what to put inside my kids’ bodies. The grocery list really helps. I really like the fast food recommendations because now I can tell my husband what to buy when he eats it.
Julie: mother of 3 boys
Are Your Kids Running on Empty? is a fantastic book. I am a mother of three who has always tried to serve my family foods that were “good” for them. Through the chapters of this book, I now have a better understanding of food labels and what goes into the foods we eat. The “Better Choice Grocery List” has taken the quess work out of grocery shopping. Mom, I’m Hungry. What’s for Dinner? is so much more than a CD-ROM Cookbook. The kid tips, kid tested recipes and weekly food guide scratch the surface of what this CD has to offer. Thanks for compiling an all inclusive reference book for the busy mothers of today who wish to provide their families with “better choices” from the kitchen.
Tricia: mother of a girl and boy
Running on Empty is our new kitchen bible! The recipes are delicious, healthy and are enjoyed by the whole family. The CD has easy to use, uncomplicated recipes that don’t take forever to make. I especially like the Brands to Trust referral guide which I keep in my peruse and use at the store. It feels great to know I’m feeding my kids what they need for a successful future. They like that idea, too.

Lynne, Wife of Vice President of USA, Mother of two grown girls and Grandmother
Thank you for the Better Food Choices Package, a generous assortment of foods with the Kids Kritics Approved seal, and for a copy of your book, Are Your Kids Running on Empty? As a mother and grandmother, I am delighted to learn more about this important topic.
Becky: mother of 2 boys and 1 girl
Are Your Kids Running on Empty? is packed with information in a very readable, common-sense style. It pulls together basic information about nutrition and fueling our children, with practical advice that any parent can use to help their picky eater, athlete, or student to not only perform better, but also enjoy eating! I especially appreciate the Better Choices Grocery List, and the review of fast food Better Choices, since we can’t always plan ahead to eat at home.
Michele: mother of 1 girl and 2 boys
I am the mother of 3 incredibly active children. Our lives revolve around school, sports and school related activities. We were all running around on hyper-drive until we faced a frightening reality check 7 years ago. John, our middle son, had some serious problems with his immune system. Through excellent medical care and the help of the information contained in this wonderful, well-researched book, John is a healthy active teenager and happens to be a nationally ranked junior tennis player. This book has helped our family create a healthier and more thoughtful way of looking at what we put in our bodies. It is an investment in a life time of better health! I highly recommend it.
Carla: mother of a boy and a girl
I wanted to give you some feedback, no pun intended, on your workshop (Kid Kritics Clinic) with the 6th grade class, of which my son is a part. He was so inspired by your presentation he was parroting grams of sugar content from various products and noting which foods we should have in the frig such a mozzarella, good chicken, etc. You made a good and lasting impression!
Lisa: mother of 2 boys
I purchased your book at the school bookfair at Barnes and Noble. I loved it and began refining my household nutrition, with my boys joking with me about … “Oh, no, mom read another book.” And then my oldest boy came home from 6th grade science (location of a Kid Kritics Taste Test) last week enthusiastically providing nutrition advice …”No mom, don’t put artificial sugar in your coffee.” … “Do you know that there are cookes with an ingredient that actually stimulates your appetite, and that’s why, mom, you eat the entire row?” He’s made smoothies each day for the family. Thanks, Ellen!!!
Shelley: mother of a girl and a boy
It is really nice to have good suggestions for healthy eating that my kids will eat. They really like a lot of the food choices on the grocery list and the recipes
have been really wonderful.
Amy, Mother of 5 children
Congratulations & thanks for sharing! Our daughter, Stephanie, 6th grader @ SAS enjoyed & learned a lot from your presentation last week. Thank you for all that you are doing to make our children healthier.
Letter from the Saint Andrew’s School 6th Grade Secretary
Re: Kid Kritics Clinic. Thank you for teaching us how to eat healthy. We all enjoyed learning about what foods we eat regularly, that are very unhealthy. We also enjoyed tasting all of the foods in science class. We have already started a no candy rule in the 6th grade to help us eat healthier. We all learned a lot about eating right.
Sincerely, The 6th Grade

I must admit that, growing up in a household where airplanes are very prominent (my father being in the Aerospace Industry) my parents always managed to get my brother and I to eat our carrots by telling us they were good for our eyes, so if we ate up, we would become excellent fighter pilots. Worked every time. Thanks so much for the information, you have certainly provided ample amounts for my article. I will mark your speech in December on my calendar and do my best to attend.
Andrea, mother of boys
Joann just called me and told me to check out your website - it’s great! I look forward to returning often. And I can’t wait to get the book and recipe CD she ordered for me! I have fallen back to “bad” foods simply because I spend a fortune on healthy foods that my boys won’t eat. Thank you for putting this together!
Elizabeth Pickup, Science Instructor, Middle School, Saint Andrew’s School
Ellen Briggs has brought her Better Food Choices program to science classes at Saint Andrew’s Middle School for five years. I am so please to have her book available now to help parents properly fuel their children for the demanding lives these students live. Ellen presents good food choices in a colorful student-oriented way that has your people excitedly waving their hands to respond, calling out answers, sharing nutritional information with friends, learning to read the ingredient listings on their favorite foods, and enjoying healthy snacks.
In addition to learning about food that will fuel their bodies well, science classes have “blind” taste-tested foods that have organic ingredients, are minus the bad fats and dye, low in sugar, and filled with real food to give products the Kid Kritics Approved seal. It was so reassuring to see middle school students hunger for wholesome well-fed chicken, more chicken!
Following Ellen’s presentation and taste-testing, our sixth-grade did a school-wide survey on drinks to sell on pizza day. After students published the sugar and additive content of canned soft drinks - apple juice, water and the natural fruit soda IZZE were the top choices of our middle school. Working with Ellen Briggs’ Better Food Choices program, has truly made our students aware of what is in the foods they enjoy and how these foods postively affect their growing bodies.
Bridgett L. White, K-5 Science Teacher, Saint Andrew’s School, mother of 2 boys
On April 22, 2205, Ellen Briggs came to Saint Andrew’s School to give a presentation, Are Your Kids Running on Empty?, to Lower schools parents on making Better Food Choices. On May 6th, she gave a Kid Kritics Clinic presentation to grades K-5. The following Wednesday, May 11th, and Thursday, May 12th, Ellen visited the science classes and did a follow-up presentation where we conducted food testing.
I expected the kids to be excited about tasting foods but what I did not expect is how much they craved the knowledge about the foods they were already eating and how they wanted to know more about eating better and feeling better. It was difficult to get them to go to their next class; they wanted to ask more questions. In addition, numerous parents have stopped me in the halls, called me at home, or have made apporintments to see me about what went on in science class. They had never seen their kids so excited about a topic. Other moms said, “Thank you for doing this because I mention this to my kids all the time but now someone else is saying it and they are now listening.”
May 26th Ellen came to give us the results and again the students could not wait to tell her what they had been eating and bombarded her with questions. They were overjoyed when they learned Mrs. Briggs was going to come back int he fall to teach them some more.
As a parent of 2 young boys who were lucky enough to experience this program, my children are making Better Food Choices. True, not all the time, but they want to eat well because they want to feel good and have the energy to be the best they can be. There is no longer an arguement when I say no to soda, fast food, and other Junk Food!
