I watch people putting cases and huge bottles of soda in their carts and wonder what they are thinking. They are spending their hard earned money on carbonated dyed sugar water, described by some as Liquid Candy. They are kidding themselves when they are buying diet which is worse. Both are empty of nutrients and full of disease related ingredients. Not only are you paying for the actual soda, you will be soon paying for soda induced doctor and pharmaceutical bills in the near and far future. This is an addictive acting expensive habit. Buy water or water filters instead. Stop throwing your money down the soda drain. Can you afford to do this?

… for the health of families,

It's summer so why not cave and eat that ice cream cone, strawberry shortcake, drink lots of ice cold pink lemonade? After all, its hot out and don't you deserve some sugar fun? I would agree that an occasional summer treat is in order. My choice is real, not dyed green, mint chocolate chip ice cream. However, I don't want to play with fire, the diabetes and debilitating related diseases consequences. Problem is, sugar is not just in treats. It is a dominant player in processed foods such as ketchup and flavored yogurts. How much should you have? Woman, about 6 teaspoons a day. Children, about 4 teaspoons daily. Sound reasonable? Note: 4 grams of sugar equals 1 teaspoon. BBQ sauce (1/2 cup) has 33 grams = more than 8 teaspoons of sugar. A fat-free fruit yogurt may have 47 grams – almost 12 teaspoons of sugar. And that delicious pink (dyed) lemonade? 1 cup contains 25 grams or over 6 teaspoons, more than you daily limit. How many of you drink just one cup on a hot day? Get my point? So how do your humble your sugar cravings? Be aware and eat less. By the way, protein is known to diminish your desire for sweets. Eat nuts, seeds, cheese, slices of meat or hummus to manage your sugar intake. Then once in awhile, have that ice cream cone!

… for the health of your family,

Performance food is an understatement when talking about salmon. It fuels just about everything: brain, blood, bones, ears (hearing), eyes, hair, heart, lungs, mouth/teeth, muscles, nails, nerves, nose (sense of smell), skin. One reason is that this fish is filled with good fats. Challenge: avoid farmed raised salmon because of their use of antibiotics, dyes and other unwanted chemicals. Only buy wild Atlantic and Pacific salmon. To save money, cook and mix small pieces in casseroles or stir-fries. Also, delicious frozen wild salmon patties are sold at warehouse stores such as Costco. Enjoy them!

A report estimates “50% to 90% of presumed allergies aren’t, in fact, allergies.”* This article points out that frequently used singular diagnosis practices such as skin and blood tests administered by doctors are not soley reliable. What is really needed is the complete picture provided by taking family history and a medically supervised food challenges. There are so many variables that is is necessary to be thorough when evaluating food reactions. Here are the eight most common foods with the percentage of Americans who are allergic: FISH: 0.3%-0.6%. SOY: 0.2%-0.7%. PEANUTS: 0.6%-0.75%. TREE NUTS: 0.1%-0.45%. MILK: 0.9%-3%. SHELLFISH: 0.6%-1.2%. WHEAT: 0.2%-2%. EGGS: 0.3%-1%.* Bet you expected these numbers to be higher.

Double check your allergy reports. Reactions may be related to other medical conditions. Some may be related to the chemicals used when growing or raising these foods. This issue offers a good reason to chose organic. Artificial ingredients such as dyes are serious bodily rejection culprits. When addressing allergies, make sure you have covered all the bases, including serving the best possible foods at home.
