irradiation symbolirradiated symbol, jpgEthylene-oxide-2D-skeletalTwo processes commonly used to sterilize foods you eat are irradiation and ETO ( ethylene oxidization).  Irradiation is a process that exposes food to ionizing radiation in order to destroy microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, or insects that might be present in the food.  Ethlylene oxide is a colorless gas at room temperature and a colorless liquid below 51ºF (10.7ºC) which smells like ether at toxic levels. It also destroys microorganisms.  Trouble is, neither can discern between the good and bad ones thus potentially damaging nutritious miroorganisms naturally found in foods.  Both are suspected of damaging good cells living in the bodies of the people who eat these foods.  ETO is considered a carcinogenic compound and the use on food is not legal in Europe. 

Irradiation is primarily used on produce and fresh meats.  Because these are not packaged and labelled, the companies do not have to reveal their usage of these gases.  ETO processing does not have to be identified for any foods.  So you have no way of knowing whether you are eating ETOed foods or not.  Chances are, you  have since almost all but organic food brands use these gasing processes.  For instance, herbs and spice are usually ETOed.  We know that the Frontier Natural Coop brand does not use either irradiation or ETO.  Instead, they use a safe and effective steam sterilizing process to take care of those unwanted microorganisms. 

If you are concerned about feeding your family irradiated and ETOd foods, buy organic.  It is so discouraging to learn that the government and food companies are not being transparent in their practices, especially those that are potentially distructive to the health of your family.  This is why we need to eat a lot of immune building foods.  Do the best you can!
